Appeal to the Optimism Foundation: Request to Update RetroFunding Round 6 Application
by DanSingjoy - No Role
Posted on: Oct. 31, 2024, 4:21 a.m.
Content: Hi @Jonas, @op_julian, @system,
I’m reaching out regarding three declined RetroFunding Round 6 applications that represent essential impact from our development and events teams. These applications were perceived as duplicates by reviewers, despite their distinct contributions.
While our Optimism Fractal Respect Game Events application 1 was approved, the current outcome means most of our contributors’ significant impact over the past year would go unrecognized. This is particularly concerning because the approved application explicitly excludes these other contributions.
The approved application specifically states, “It does not include the development of tools used at the events or the Optimism Town Hall events which take place after Respect Game events, as there are separate applications for these projects.” As a result, these vital contributions are now at risk of not being recognized at all.
Context
As leader of two teams focused on Optimism governance, I’ve coordinated both technical development and event facilitation over the past year. This represents substantial impact from:
A technical team with one full-time and three part-time developers who have built governance infrastructure that is not currently being recognized
An events team with two full-time and two part-time contributors who have hosted ~ 60 governance events that are not currently being recognized
Multiple contributors who have worked almost exclusively on Optimism over the past year to create critical infrastructure and processes for the Collective
Our request is crucial not only for our teams - whose continued ability to support the Collective depends substantially on RetroFunding - but also for the Collective itself, as our tools and events provide essential infrastructure for improving governance processes. Our experience offers the Collective an opportunity to become more supportive of novel governance approaches while improving RetroFunding’s inclusivity and effectiveness. This aligns directly with the Collective’s core axiom of rewarding impact with profit and building more equitable systems.
Request
The Application Review Process 2 states “The Foundation decides which applications are allowed to be edited.” Through this provision, I respectfully request permission to:
Update our approved Optimism Fractal Respect Games Events application to include contributions from the declined applications
Rename it to “Optimism Fractal Respect Games + Optimystics Tools and Events”
This request is straightforward because:
The Optimism Fractal Respect Games application was already approved with unanimous support
Changes align with the Collective’s mission to reward impact
Badgeholders would gain a complete picture for evaluation
I’ve already begun drafting the combined application to ensure a smooth update if approved.
Understanding Our Appeal
While approving this request should be straightforward based on the reasons above, I’ve prepared detailed documentation that provides valuable context both for this specific appeal and for improving future RetroFunding rounds. The document, titled Recognizing Impact in RetroFunding: Round 6 Appeal and Process Insights 1 , examines:
Impact of Structural Changes: How RetroFunding Round 6 design modifications affect evaluation of diverse, high-impact contributions
Supporting Teams and Contributors: Overview of the technical and events teams driving governance innovation
Excluded Project Contributions: Analysis of how the approved application explicitly excludes key technical and community contributions
Review Process Challenges: Documentation of reviewers’ misunderstanding the application review process rules/procedures, impact assessment, and technical issues
Critical Recognition of Community Contributions: Why proper evaluation supports both team sustainability and Collective growth
Benefits for the Collective: How this appeal advances both immediate fairness and long-term governance evolution
In addition, the documentation includes comprehensive links to each project’s applications, impact pages, and prior appeals, clearly demonstrating significant verifiable impact through metrics and community feedback. Despite this demonstrated impact and thousands of hours of critical work specifically for Optimism Governance, all the members of our teams have collectively received only a modest 30 , 000 OP from Optimism in total (during RetroPGF Round 3 ).
This documentation provides both important context about our contributors’ work and concrete insights for enhancing how the Collective recognizes and rewards impact. I encourage Foundation members and anyone interested in improving RetroFunding’s impact evaluation processes to review these materials.
Timing and Next Steps
While voting has now begun, most reviewers have not yet cast their votes. Approving this update would enable proper evaluation of our contributors’ complete impact during the remainder of the two-week voting period.
We would greatly appreciate if you could approve this request to ensure reviewers can fully understand and evaluate our work. If a complete update isn’t possible, even removing the sentence that explicitly excludes other contributions would help prevent misunderstanding and enable more accurate evaluation.
I’m happy to provide any additional context needed or discuss alternative approaches to ensure fair consideration of this work. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this request.
Note: This post has been updated to reflect current timing (now that voting has begun) and provide important clarifications about our contributors’ work and impact. Over the past few days I’ve also significantly expanded the accompanying Recognizing Impact in RetroFunding Round 6 1 documentation with enhanced analysis and process insights.
For an overview of recent updates, please see here. Your consideration of this request is greatly appreciated.

Optimism Fractal Season 4
by DanSingjoy - No Role
Posted on: Oct. 23, 2024, 3:16 a.m.
Content: Hi everyone! I’m excited to share details about this week’s RetroSeason events. We’re launching RetroSeason while celebrating Optimism Fractal’s one-year anniversary and starting to conclude our current seasons.
This Wednesday - Eden Fractal Season Finale ( 16 UTC)
Join us for a comprehensive analysis of Optimism Fractal’s transformative first year while exploring Eden Fractal’s unique role in advancing fractal decision-making. We’ll examine both communities’ impacts through newly created analysis pages, discussing how our governance innovations and tools are shaping the Superchain. While Thursday’s events will focus on individual journeys, this session takes a holistic look at our collective achievements and impact. See details in the article.
This Thursday - Optimism Fractal Anniversary Events
• Respect Game ( 17 UTC): We’ll begin with our traditional weekly Respect Game, where participants share their recent contributions to Optimism. This core practice continues as usual, setting the stage for our anniversary celebrations.
• Anniversary RetroPitches & Retrospectives ( 18 UTC): Following the Respect Game, we’ll transition to Optimism Town Hall for special RetroPitches and Retrospectives. Each community member will have 3 - 5 minutes to share their contributions to Optimism Fractal and how it has benefited them over the past year. We encourage everyone to prepare thoughtful reflections for this milestone celebration. See the topic proposal for details.
These events mark the beginning of RetroSeason, our initiative to enhance impact evaluation in the Collective through RetroPolls and other innovations. Learn more about RetroSeason in the article last week’s and the video from last week’s Town Hall.
Season Transitions for Each Event
We’re planning to conclude our current seasons with RetroSeason. Here’s what to expect for each event:
• Eden Fractal: Hosting its final finale on October 23 rd, then taking a month-long break before returning on November 27 th.
• Optimism Fractal: Hosting its final Season 4 event on October 31 st, with Season 5 launching after a two-week break on November 21 st (as per this new proposal)
• Optimism Town Hall: Ending this season on October 31 st and resuming on November 21 st.
All RetroSeason events are open to everyone and complement each other in different ways - Eden Fractal providing holistic analysis, while Optimism Town Hall offers space for personal reflections. You’re welcome to RSVP for any events on the event calendar and we appreciate your help in spreading the word about Optimism Fractal RetroSeason by sharing this tweet or cast.
I’m deeply grateful for everyone’s contributions this past year and excited to celebrate together while launching this new chapter. Looking forward to seeing you at the events!

Hi friends!
You’re invited to join the Optimism Fractal event on Thursdays at 17 UTC to collaborate with Superchain builders, promote your work, and earn awards by playing the Respect Game. The event offers a fantastic opportunity to experiment with governance, add accountability to your progress, and serves as a great engine for networking opportunities.

Weekly Events
Optimism Fractal
The Respect Game is a profoundly helpful consensus game that provides a fun way to foster collaborations, award public goods creators, and fairly measure positive impact. Participants share what they did to help Optimism, rank each other’s work, and earn Respect tokens through consensus. These tokens allow participation in the community council, voting on discussion topics at Town Halls, and other innovative use cases.
You can learn more about the Respect Game in this article and explore the welcome guide for more tips on how to play :books:
Optimism Town Hall
The Optimism Town Hall events provide an open forum to participate in governance discussions and pioneer the future of community coordination in Optimism. After the Respect Game, we’ll play an OPTOPICS agenda game to select a discussion topic during the Optimism Town Hall at 18 UTC.
image 1170 × 662 133 KB
I proposed the OPTOPICS Cagendas game for this week’s Optimism Town Hall, so we’ll discuss whatever topic(s) has the most votes in the OPTOPICS Snapshot space. Feel free to propose new topics, vote, and change your votes on topics from prior weeks.

[Looking for sponsor] Develop Onchain Social Games that Attract Builders to Optimism (v4)

Content: Hello,
I just proposed a fourth version of the Mission Request to develop onchain social games that attract developers to Optimism and I would greatly appreciate your support/sponsorship. This Mission Request is the same as the prior versions, except it has a lower budget that fits within the remaining budget for Optimism Season 6 .
You can find detailed posts below that explain the rationale for this Mission Request and describe why it’s important for the Grants Council to support it.
You can find context, rationale, and historical details for this Mission Request in this post 1 .
My primary aim in creating this Mission Request is to support the developers who are building onchain social games in the Optimism Fractal community. You can see the onchain social games, apps, and software that we’re developing at Optimystics.io/tools 1 and a related Mission Proposal here.
You can find a detailed explanation of the budget rationale in this post 2 , which was addressing a community member’s questions about funding justification in Cycle 27 . This post waw provides details on why funding this mission request is necessary to maximize benefits for the Collective.
You can find another post here which outlines the significant benefits of supporting onchain social games and urged approval of the Mission Request with the original 250 k OP budget. This was written three months ago, shortly after creating the initial version of this Mission Request.
You can watch two videos and explore show notes that my team has produced for more details about our recent work with Missions in Optimism Season 6 . Here is the first video and here is the second video.
Together, these posts and videos present a compelling case for why this Mission Request not only deserves its proposed funding but also warrants a substantially larger budget.
Though the 15 k budget is much lower than originally requested, it would still be much appreciated and very helpful to potentially provide compensation for the teams of Optimism Fractal developers who are volunteering to build open-source software for onchain social games, such as the Respect Game. These onchain social games enable innovative governance protocols, capital allocation systems, developer tooling, and many other profound benefits for the Superchain. That being said, this Mission Request could also support all kinds of other onchain social game developers.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or comments. Thank you for your time and consideration.
