[grant update] bleu Tech Partner of OP Native Projects
by bleu_builders - No Role
Posted on: Nov. 4, 2024, 5:35 p.m.
Content: Hey @gonna.eth, thanks for the response.
I think there might be some confusion here. The question isn’t about whether this grant has been approved, but rather about the approval process for individual projects we work with under our grant.
To clarify the background:
Our grant allows us to provide technical support to Optimism ecosystem projects
We’ve been operating under an optimistic approval model for selecting projects, as discussed in our earlier updates
The concern raised by Marc (Candide) is that this optimistic approval model isn’t sufficient assurance for them to proceed
They’re hesitant to delegate work on mission-critical components (like their Account Recovery Frontend) when there’s a theoretical risk of work being halted under the optimistic model.
Do you think there is a way we can provide more concrete assurance to projects like Candide while still maintaining the spirit of the optimistic approval process? This would help unblock several potential collaborations that are currently in limbo due to this uncertainty.

Quest Development Strategy
We’re close to completing the development of MVP quests implementation and excited to share the MVP version for the first tests soon!
Just as a recap, we’ll be releasing new quests using a phased rollout strategy. After the MVP comes:
The quests that were selected to V 1 :
OP holder - user has OP in its wallet;
For those who want to delegate:
Delegation info - Understand why delegate and how’s the process;
First Step - Delegate at least 1 OP to someone;
Expanded Network - Delegate to more than one person;
For delegates:
Active Debater - Engage in at least 2 forum discussions;
Grant Architect - Publish a mission grants proposal;
Rising Star Supporter - Spotlight a smaller delegate.
The delivery of other core features (e.g. leaderboard and notification system).
Tentative V 2 & more: These are additional, non-essential quests planned based on the remaining budget for the project. We’d love to see them also in the system, but we want to keep the focus on what’s important to the mission’s objective and will deprioritize them unless there’s enough interest / budget to allow implementing them.
The overall strategy and quests selected for each version can be checked out here.
Still seeking Delegate feedback
We’ve reached out to 15 + additional delegates and OP ecosystem participants to ask for their input about what we’ve done so far. So far, only 5 of them have responded, saying that they will look into it or with brief comments on the mission’s difficulty, without deeper feedback. We’re looking for feedback about 1 ) quest structure; 2 ) reward system; 3 ) user engagement / launch strategy.
FYI, this is what we sent them:
We’re grantees working on non-technical solutions to increase the # of first-time delegators, voters, and votable supply in Optimism and we’re reaching out for a quick feedback.
Our proposal is a gamified experience to guide users through this journey. Our latest updates from the projects can be found here: [grant update] OP Govquests
We’d really appreciate having your opinion about our initial ideas, mostly regarding:
Quest Structure: We’ve designed a series of quests that guide users through the delegation process.
Reward System: We’re allocating rewards based on quest completion, delegation milestones, and ongoing engagement in the ecosystem.
Here’s our quests, tracks and tiers schema
Reward rationale
UI Designs
Could you please share your thoughts on:
a) Which aspect do you think will be most effective for encouraging delegation and motivating people to become delegates?
b) Do you think the monetary incentives we’ve proposed make sense?
c) Do you see a gap or a missed opportunity in our current design?
All in all, we want to underscore that we’re being paid to build OP Govquests for you - the delegates and future delegates who make Optimism governance work. But we can’t do it in isolation. The low response rate to our outreach makes us wonder if we’re approaching this the wrong way or missing something important. We’d love to hear your thoughts, whether they’re positive or critical - both help us build something that truly serves the community. Even a quick 5 -minute chat would help ensure we’re building what you actually need.

Key Progress
Gitcoin Stamps Extraction
We extracted Gitcoin badges from noisy users detected by the graph-based algorithm, enriching our training and test datasets. These stamps provide an additional layer of verification for users who use Warpcast and have registered at least one stamp on Gitcoin.
Improved Graph-based Model and Model Testing
Since the API must support a large amount of data, it is important to have an algorithm that can be executed asynchronously and to provide fast benign/sybil checks. We’ve built on top of the graph-based SybilScar algorithm to have a smaller memory footprint for the full dataset so that we can get a sybil response for each farcaster user in that dataset with subsecond response times.
Upcoming Tasks
Warpcast Bot Reporting Frame
First milestone documentation
Start developing a machine learning-based detection model

Project Highlights
Silo Finance: Telegram Health Factor Bot
Launched the tool, and we’ve seen light usage so far.
Next: Working with Silo’s team to increase usage and get more feedback.
Pike: Liquidation Bot Research
Current Status: Waiting for their code to be open-sourced before continuing work under the scope of the grant.
Namespace: Offchain Subnames Manager
We’ve honed in on the scope and will be developing the Namespace Offchain Manager app.
Project Overview: The app enables ENS name owners to create and manage offchain subnames, resolvable via the CCIP-Read protocol.
see the full proposal/scope here
Next: Begin initial development following final confirmation of focus areas.
Candide: Account Recovery Frontend
Current Status: Work has started but is halted due to Candide’s concerns about optimistic approval and their time investment.
Next: Awaiting resolution on approval to proceed.
Challenges with Optimistic Approvals
While we’ve been operating under an optimistic approval model to expedite our support for Optimism ecosystem projects, we’ve encountered a significant challenge that needs community attention and discussion.
Our collaboration with Candide on their Account Recovery Frontend has highlighted concerns regarding optimistic approvals. Candide, like other partners, has expressed hesitation to invest in mission-critical projects under the current model due to the risk of work stoppage.
Key points include:
Risk of Work Stoppage: There’s a risk that work could be halted at any point if objections are raised after we’ve already started.
Impact on Critical Infrastructure: Candide’s Account Recovery Frontend is essential to their operations, and any disruptions could delay their launch.
Resource Investment: Partners like Candide are hesitant to invest resources without assurances that the work won’t be interrupted.
Potential for Delays: This situation could result in partners staffing these projects internally, leading to longer timelines and missed opportunities for collaboration.
Seeking Community Input
We are seeking the community’s guidance on how to balance the benefits of optimistic approvals with the need for certainty in mission-critical projects. More generally, we would love to get your input regarding how can we work with the Grants Council to provide more assurance to partners on high-priority projects, so they feel secure delegating work to us?
Next Steps
Finalize the scope with Namespace and kick off development of the Offchain Subnames Manager.
Seek guidance from the Grants Council on how to address approval concerns and provide assurance to Candide, as we believe we can deliver substantial work and good case for proving the value from this Mission Request if this issue is resolved.
You can track our progress, broken down by task and project, at our public dashboard: Metabase
As always, if you’re building on Optimism and think our services could be useful, please reach out to us on Telegram at @rpunktj, email jose@bleu.builders, or schedule a call using this link.
We’re excited about our progress and look forward to further contributing to the Optimism ecosystem!

Data Extraction
We’ve pivoted from our initial plan to run a private Hubble instance. Instead, we’re now using the Neynar API, which provides data in Parquet format. This shift allows for more efficient processing and reduces infrastructure costs. Key achievements in data extraction:
Extracted key metrics about Farcaster users (likes, casts, recasts, follower/following counts)
Built a dataset of over 11 , 000 labeled users (sybil/benign) using BotOrNot and manual verification
Transformed Farcaster data into an undirected social network (focusing on mutual connections between users)
SybilSCAR Implementation
After exploring several graph-based Sybil detection algorithms, including SybilRank and SybilBelief, we’ve selected SybilSCAR as our primary method. SybilSCAR offers the best balance of speed, memory allocation, and accuracy for our needs.
We’ve begun applying it to our transformed Farcaster social network data and are developing a Sybil detection API. This API will manage and update datasets while providing an endpoint to check whether a Farcaster user is classified as a Sybil or a benign user.
Upcoming Tasks
Document first milestone
Extract gitcoin passports of users
Conduct thorough testing of the API results
Deploy the Sybil detection API to production
Enhance the training dataset to improve overall accuracy

We completed the draft of the initial system screens. You can check the first versions at this public link 3 .
Quests rationale
We’ve developed an initial schema for our quest system, outlining the logic we aim to implement. Additionally, we’ve created a simplified MVP version of this logic to ensure an early launch for community feedback. You can review the initial schema in this link. 2
Our approach separates registered addresses into three categories: delegates, non-delegates, and those aspiring to become delegates. Based on this categorization, the app will suggest personalized quest tracks guiding users through key actions related to their profile, such as:
Becoming a delegate and voting for the first time
Delegating OP to others
Referring new delegates
Aligning with our mission’s main objectives, we’ve also included a track for delegates who haven’t voted yet, leading them through educational content to encourage their first vote.
The team is currently finalizing:
Complete definition of missions
First version of the reward system
These updates will be shared soon!
Project Setup
We’ve laid the groundwork for the application, ensuring all necessary systems (repo, CI/CD, deployment infrastructure) are in place. We’ve also started working on the main pages of the app:
