Guide to Season 4 : As a Collective
We’d like to start by recognizing the incredible contributions of our delegates in Season 3 :
Retroactive Delegate Rewards Season 3 184 : Retroactive rewards in recognition of the important contributions of top active delegates over the past Season.
In Season 4 , we’ll lay the groundwork to align the entire community around Collective Intents and several other foundational concepts upon which the Collective will be built.
Introducing: Intents
Intents are directional goals that allow the Collective to align and focus. All work supported or executed by the Collective should be in pursuit of our Collective Intents.
You can think of an Intent as a near term target. Each Intent will be equipped with its own budget for Season 4 .
Intents 1600 × 620 12 . 3 KB
Introducing: Missions
Token House Missions 78 are proposals for specific initiatives that achieve an Intent. You can think of a Mission as an arrow aiming at the target (Intent). Just as there are many paths an arrow might take on its way to the target, there are many different Missions that might accomplish an Intent. Missions are specific initiatives that can be completed start-to-finish in a given timeframe.
Missions 1600 × 618 18 . 7 KB
There are two types of Missions:
Proposed Missions 48 must be submitted under an Intent. Each Intent will be equipped with its own budget. The Token House will then rank order Proposed Missions until the budget for each Intent is fully allocated. Proposed Missions enable the Governance Fund to support a broader range of initiatives aligned with our Intents.
Foundation Missions 64 are Missions that are defined by the Foundation and are akin to public Requests for Proposals for the Partner Fund. Foundation Missions must also work towards our Intents.
Introducing: Alliances
Missions are executed by Alliances 36 , or groups of contributors that temporarily work together to accomplish a Mission start-to-finish.
Alliances 1600 × 480 95 . 4 KB
Alliances can submit proposals based on Collective Trust Tiers 54 , the very first step towards a more robust reputation system based on positive impact within the ecosystem. Attestations 35 will also be introduced in Season 4 , allowing reputation to start accumulating on-chain.
Collective Trust Tiers 1600 × 632 31 . 1 KB
How it all Comes Together
How it comes together 1944 × 1662 223 KB
Season 4 is ambitious as it introduces many of the foundational concepts behind the Optimistic Vision 7 . Collective Intents are the first step in aligning the Token House and Citizens’ House in pursuit of our strategic goals. Missions 78 enable the Token House to support work aligned with these Intents and to start bootstrapping a market for RetroPGF. Collective Trust Tiers 54 hint at a future in which one’s positive impact in the ecosystem creates additional opportunity.
Finally, in Season 4 , the Foundation will take several steps towards increased transparency and further decentralization by voting on two additional proposal types for the first time: Treasury Appropriations (Foundation budget approval) and Inflation Adjustment.
In designing the Season 4 structure, we’ve drawn inspiration from governance experiments run at several other DAOs, primarily Gitcoin, ENS, and CabinDAO. As tribute, we will nominate these DAOs in the next round of RetroPGF. :red_circle: :sparkles:
We know this is a lot information to digest. We’ve scheduled a Foundation AMA to answer any and all of your questions on Season 4 .
You can see the AMA and the entire schedule outlined below on our public governance calendar 88 .

Voting Cycles and Seasons will continue at their regular frequency.
Season 4 of the Collective introduces new concepts like Collective Intents, Missions, and Alliances, aimed at aligning the community towards specific goals. Proposed and Foundation Missions, aligned with Intents, will be supported by the Token House. Alliances will execute Missions. Trust Tiers for contributors are introduced, indicating a future reputation system. The Foundation is moving towards more transparency and decentralization. Delegates have specific tasks like providing feedback on drafts, approving Intent Budgets, electing Council members, and participating in voting cycles. The season structure is influenced by other DAOs like Gitcoin and ENS, with the emphasis on aligning efforts towards strategic goals. The post also provides information on upcoming activities, deadlines, and an AMA session to clarify the Season 4 framework.

First, I am sorry I have not participated much during the AMA as I am at an early part of the learning curve. In fact, someone said “infographic” and I thought it would be very helpful in understanding the guide to Season 4 so I’ll leave it up in case it works for anyone else. Thanks for organizing the AMA, it was very interesting!
Mark.eth_De.Fi: I think that in fact we will have even more different events, which will offer incentives for developers and the community to develop the ecosystem
But I can say with confidence that the results of the last few months are very impressive and the activity we’ve seen from everyone in the ecosystem in every field really looks inspiring
Too bad I missed this AMA, but I think there will be more opportunities like this

Nice, a well refined/defined post. I really tried my best and voted in season 3 , although I’m not where near a big delegate with only 550 votes give or take. I look forward to what’s proposed in season 4 and hope I can follow along easily and vote/participate to help the community.

It’s very exciting to see the new framework for Season 4 ! We think the Season 4 roadmap is well structured and provides clear guidance on the priorities of the Optimism Collective. Very excited to see these initiatives come to fruition, and we’d be interested in exploring ways of contributing/collaborating with the community in an Alliance!

Subli_Defi: thanks a lot for your graphics, very clear indeed. If you’re ok, i’d like to use it in one of my article. Ofc, i’ll quote you as the owner of this

I think that in fact we will have even more different events, which will offer incentives for developers and the community to develop the ecosystem
But I can say with confidence that the results of the last few months are very impressive and the activity we’ve seen from everyone in the ecosystem in every field really looks inspiring
Too bad I missed this AMA, but I think there will be more opportunities like this

I very much like the ideas and the direction proposed for Season 4 .
My main concern is lack of participation. I could be proven wrong, but it feels like governance participation might not be big/active enough yet for a system with complexity like this.
I still believe that we should push on but it’s something to be aware of. One thing I think governance within Optimism has sorely needed is abstraction layers. Participants who operate on a specific layer (e.g. join an alliance) shouldn’t have to understand how the entire system works, but just the parts that are specific to them. It’s something to think about for those who are creating educational material.

Our first wave of feedback
Hi community and governance members, from our side we are excited about this clear change in methodology for Season 4 to cover different objectives and ensure that they are met with a more thorough system. Iterating on the governance of Optimism has always been a priority, and we agree that this is one way we can make this upcoming season different. We are moving towards an “optimistic” future but we also stress the efforts to make governance as horizontal as possible in a feasible way, we can achieve this with the different proposals expressed here!
As expressed in “The Optimistic Vision 1 ”:
The Optimism Collective is a new model of digital democratic governance optimized to drive rapid and sustained growth of a decentralized ecosystem. The Collective is a band of communities, companies, and citizens united by a mutually beneficial pact to adhere to the axiom of impact=profit — the principle that positive impact to the collective should be rewarded with profit to the individual. This axiom serves as a North Star, motivating the creation of a more productive and empathetic economy.
We leave below our first feedback on the proposals discussed for season 4 :
[OLD] Collective Intents: Season 4 ? Token House Governance
After reading the Collective Intents initiative, we want to provide our first feedback on the four proposed items, and share some first thoughts:
Intent 1
This is one of the most interesting and necessary paths for Optimism to mature as a protocol. It seems to us that it is going in the right direction, we recognize that the path to the completion of the development of Optimism has to take place sooner rather than later and open the option for the community to contribute, honoring the ethos th…
Token House Missions ARCHIVED Mission Proposals
Pretty excited about this one. We believe that it is the natural step after some intense seasons past in the distribution of funds to different initiatives, which have fulfilled their mission (others not so much) and that it is time to iterate on something different. Having the foundation propose missions is a good first step; however, we believe that the missions of the foundation must have a feedback stage with the governance to improve their scope.
